
There doesn't need to be a lot of ingredients in great whole grain,
whole-wheat bread. Five pure and simple ingredients are all it takes:
whole-wheat flour, filtered water, fresh yeast, salt, and something
sweet (usually a local honey). In fact, we'd say bread is best when you
keep it simple. It's even better when you use the highest quality
ingredients you can find.
For us, that means fresh-grinding all of our wheat in our stores. Just
like fresh ground coffee beans make a better cup of coffee, fresh
ground grains of wheat make a better tasting - and better for you! -
loaf of bread. For the best whole-wheat taste, it's important to rush
flour from the mill to the mixing bowl. Until you taste bread that
fresh, chances are you've never really tasted the true flavor of wheat.
As far as preservatives go, forget about
it! Great Harvest breads have never been made with preservatives or
artificial additives of any kind…and they never will. Thanks
to our special scratch-made process, our breads still stay fresh for up
to ten days (if you can keep your hands off it that long!)
If it doesn’t taste
phenomenal, we don’t bake it!
That’s the difference between Great Harvest whole-grain
breads and all the others. Many of our first-time
customers bite into their first slice of Great Harvest bread and say
they never really knew whole-wheat bread could taste so good, until
they tasted Great Harvest. Even kids love our
whole-grain Honey Whole Wheat! (And that says a
lot, because we all know kids will only eat what they
like!) It’s enough to make a baker
smile. And you too, we hope!
WEIGH LESS. Whole-grain foods are digested slowly, making us
feel “fuller” longer, shutting down hunger sooner,
and reducing calorie intake.
BE HEALTHIER. Whole grains are rich in fiber,
vitamins, trace minerals, antioxidants, & phytochemicals proven
to help fight heart disease and cancer.
LIVE LONGER. Whole grains have been shown to significantly
reduce the risks of cancer, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders,
and Type 2 diabetes.
On your first visit to our bakery, you may wonder
why everybody gets a
slice of bread for free. Most people assume these are
“samples” so they can “try before they
buy,” except they’ve never seen samples that
big. Our breadboard is not a “sample”
board. In fact, the only thing we like about the word sample is
“ample.” Our breadboard is a place where anyBODY
can get a big hunk of FRESH bread, whenever they want, even if they
never buy a thing.
Some people think a business is just to make money, so naturally our
breadboard is confusing. But we are in the business for three reasons:
to be part of this neighborhood, to make money, and to have fun.
We’re in it for all three. The day we stop making money, or
it stops being fun, we quit.
The breadboard is our fun. The cash register is our money. So you see,
when you’re at our breadboard, you’re keeping this
whole thing going, just as much as the people at the cash register.
People are happiest when they make other people happy. As bakers,
we’rE hapPiest when WE seE peoPLE eating OUR bread right when
it comes from the oven.
Some people worry that we don’t know what we’re
doing. Trust us – we’re far from going broke! In
fact, every time a person runs in, grabs a big slice, and runs outside
smacking their lips, we sEem to geT morE cuStomers. The cash register
takes care of the breadboard – but the breadboard also takes
care of the cash register, and everything is going great for us, all
around.
So just relax about the frEe BREAD already!We’re relaxed.
